Ms Dynamite – ‘Neva Soft’

Ms Dynamite has laid pretty dormant in recent years, but after a fantastic return on Katy B‘s ‘Lights On’, the spark was lit and continues to flare on comeback solo single, ‘Neva Soft’.

We have to say, we’ve missed Ms Dynami-tee-hee, and having not heard anything from her since 2006, it comes as even more of a treat to hear her distinct urban stylings once more. ‘Neva Soft’ serves as a timely reminder of how good British female rapping can be (sorry Alesha Dixon and Cher Lloyd) and with Labrinth on production duties.Dynamite has previously revealed that ‘Neva Soft’ was finished within a day of working with Labrinth in the studio, and their musical chemistry is evident. Kicking things off with the recurring reggae-tinged guitar hook and drum rolls, feedback seeps in and a dark bass sizzles preceding Ms Dynamite’s fierce patois delivery.

Drum and bass takes over on the chorus with Lab’s distorted backing vocals, electronic flourishes and a faster paced beat backing Dynamite’s demands as she sings: “Have no fear now, levitate”. A frantic piano-led middle-eight only further enriches the texture of this rich tapestry of musical influences.

Showcasing an ability to grasp different genres, remain relevant and lead the pack of female MCs here in the UK, Ms Dynamite’s return is a welcome one. Download ‘Neva Soft’ in the Orange Music Store now.
