Cultural Life: Ms Dynamite, Singer

Music / I’ve been listening to Scottish R&B and soul singer Emeli Sande who I love. She recently released her first solo single, “Heaven”. She featured on Chipmunk’s debut single, “Diamond Rings”, as well as on Wiley’s “Never Be Your Woman”. I’ve also been listening to Wretch 32. I haven’t managed to listen to the entire album ‘Black and White’, but I’m in the process of it now and it sounds really good.

Film / I’m dying to have some time off to see ‘Rise of the Planet of the Apes’, with James Franco and Andy Serkis. Last time I went to the cinema was to see ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2′ with my son and that was really good. I’m also really looking forward to watching ‘The Smurfs’ (pictured); I love kids films!

Books / I’m in the middle of reading this book called ‘Happiness’ by Thich Nhat Hanh. He’s a Buddhist and it’s all about appreciation and meditation. It may sound hippyish to some people but he’s a really good writer. It just makes you think about the simple things in life that you take for granted, and it gives you great practices on meditation. I’ve also just read ‘Women Who Run with Wolves: Contacting the Power of the Wild Woman’ by Clarissa Pinkola Estes. She is an American poet, post-trauma specialist and Jungian psychoanalyst. I found that one more of a difficult read, she’s very poetic in her writing and I had to read each page over a few times to make sure I took it in properly. It’s about the inner spirit of women, the nature of the woman – I’d definitely recommend that one.

Ms Dynamite is playing at Bestival on the Isle of Wight (www.bestival.net) this weekend
